Eagle Mountain
Buffy found plenty to keep herself busy on our hike along the creek on Eagle Mountain this morning.
After “oohing” and “aahing” over the water and ice,
I turned my attention to the lichens.
The word miniscule was putting it mildly.
Pencil lines would be slightly wider than the lichen’s “lines.”
It grew on several ironwood trees (Carpinus caroliniana) growing along the creek.
I was finally able to identify these online as a “script lichen” (Graphis scripta).

Very interesting, I’m going to have to keep my eye out for it!

The light areas on the bark originally caught my attention. They are tiny, and neat!

Another one of those tiny things I have never seen.

It was a first for me.I plan to spend more time investigating lichens and mosses … gives me more excuses for outings.

Neat shot of the lichen. Buffy is adorable.

Thanks. Buffy’s the best hiking partner. She’s 9 now and is slower … We always have a good time.

I saw one the other day that was maybe an inch and a half wide but they’re usually quite small. You got some good shots of it-that’s the hard part. I find them on maples here.
The lines are its fruiting bodies where its spores are released from.

I’ve been taking pictures of several lichens lately. My problem is getting pictures without finger shadows. Got pictures of a red firedot this afternoon and plan to blog it too. Such fun!
