Witches’ Butter

One reason I like mushrooms is their descriptive names,

like this Witches’ butter (Tremella mensenterica).

This small jelly-like fungus grew on a stick that fell out of the dead pear tree in our yard.

  1. I see a lot of it in the woods. We get the orange type on hemlock and the amber variety on oak and alder.

  3. That is a great name, and it’s good that you got to photograph the thing it so colorfully describes.
