A Miniature Redbird

Buffy accompanied me out in the backyard, to walk around and see what we could see.

I must say I’ve never seen a red bird such as this one. It’s actually made of leaves, and is perched high in the pine tree in my backyard. I can’t imagine the chances of leaves “making a bird,” especially one with an eye, white eye ring, both beaks and a long tongue. Now I need a name for it. Obviously, it has to be a new species.

I couldn’t see the details in this picture from a distance, and I didn’t see them until I got the picture in the blog.

Now I need a name for it … because it must be a new species.

Portrait of Foliose Lichen

This lichen grows on a tree in my backyard.

It doesn’t know its name. I don’t know its name,

which in no way diminishes my enjoyment of its discovery.

Teeny Mushroom

The word teeny came to mind when I found this mushroom.

It stood approximately 1 1/4 inch tall.

The word delicate also came to mind.

The only word that didn’t come to mind was a name for this mushroom, even after checking all of my mushroom books.

No-Name Mushrooms

The variety of mushrooms fascinates me. The one in the first picture is on wood in our yard that’s covered with black plastic. I’ve never seen any mushroom remotely like it. It’s hard like wood. The shiny surface is dry, which I didn’t expect, and it’s 4 inches tall.

What an unusual mushroom!!

I found this second mushroom  on a hike yesterday. It was in the woods, near the base of a tree. It too was hard and had a wide base.  I liked the affects of  the grass growing through the mushroom. It would be interesting to know how that happened.

Another nature mystery

I didn’t find the mushrooms in either of my 2 mushroom books. A name isn’t required for my enjoyment.
